John Prine's "The Singing Mailman Delivers" Releasing On October 25
Long before the awards and accolades, all the concerts and many, many albums, John Prine trudged through snow in the cold Chicago winters, delivering mail across Maywood, his childhood suburb. “I always likened the mail route to a library with no books,” says John Prine. “I passed the time each day making up these little ditties.”
On October 25th, 2011, Oh Boy Records (founded in 1981 by Prine and manager Al Bunetta) will release The Singing Mailman Delivers. This two-disc archival release features the earliest studio and live recordings from Prine dating back to 1970, one year before his prolific, self-titled, debut album.
In August 1970, John Prine went to Chicago’s WFMT Studios to be interviewed by Studs Terkel. “I asked after the show if it were possible to stick around and tape all the songs I had written up until then,” Prine continues. These studio recordings were simply and sincerely recorded with Prine’s trademark guitar finger-picking and early vocal style. The disc closes with the unreleased track titled “A Star, A Jewel, And A Hoax,” a brief and whimsical look into an often-overlooked cranny of everyday life.
The live performance was recorded at the Fifth Peg in Chicago in November 1970, where Prine would play three nights a week, while still delivering mail during the day. Prine says, “I still maintain that Chicago winters and postman-hungry dogs finally drove me to songwriting.”
With just his acoustic guitar, some audience banter and a friend on bass, 24-year old Prine takes the live audience through 12 of his classic tunes, a few of which already sound like crowd favorites. “I was just learning how to sing a full set of my songs and still manage to talk in between without getting shot or anything thrown at me,” he admits. The one cover track is a Hank Williams medley that Prine learned for his father with the songs “Hey Good Lookin’” and “Jambalaya (On The Bayou).”
This fall marks the 40th anniversary of that first album, John Prine, and these amateur recordings on The Singing Mailman Delivers truly show Prine as a poet whose consummate songs were refined since inception. Even the then-titled “Great Society Conflict Veteran’s Blues,” his studio and live versions of “Sam Stone,” bestow the listener an intricate sense of understanding and compassion from a humble and unassuming songwriter who wrote such words to pass time on his mail route.
Oh Boy Records will begin a presale for The Singing Mailman Delivers on Wednesday, September 21 via John Prine’s official online store MusicFansDirect.com. The full tracklisting for the album is as follows:
Disc One - Studio Performance:
1. Hello In There
2. Souvenirs
3. Great Society Conflict Veteran's Blues (early "Sam Stone")
4. Paradise
5. Blue Umbrella
6. Aw Heck
7. Illegal Smile

Goodman Post Office Wrap-Up
Yesterday's post office dedication and celebration for Steve Goodman was a rousing success. Hundreds of supporters and well-wishers in the Chicago area came out to celebrate the life of this treasured singer/songwriter and see the Lakeview Post Office near Wrigley Field be renamed in his honor.
The Chicago Sun-Times was there to cover the event, and so was the Chicago Tribune. The post office is located at 1340 West Irving Park Road in Chicago and displays not only Goodman's name, but also some musical memorabilia and photos from throughout his life and recording career.

Popular Artists Celebrate John Prine With New CD
Today’s avant-roots renaissance owes a great debt to John Prine’s laconic, ever-questioning poetic quality – a debt that is warmly repaid by Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine, available June 22nd on Oh Boy Records.
Featuring twelve newly-recorded versions of classic Prine songs, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows boasts an enviable roll call of lauded, inventive musicians and songwriters, including My Morning Jacket, The Avett Brothers, Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Lambchop, Josh Ritter, the Drive-By Truckers, Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins, Deer Tick featuring Liz Isenburg, Justin Townes Earle, Those Darlins and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. That Prine’s perspective flourishes so vividly in these modern recastings is testament to not only the sheer power of his songs, but to the subtly defiant undercurrent that runs throughout Prine’s oeuvre.
Here is the complete tracklisting:
1) Justin Vernon of Bon Iver – “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)”
2) Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band – “Wedding Day In Funeralville”
3) My Morning Jacket – “All The Best”
4) Josh Ritter – “Mexican Home”

Steve Goodman Featured In Chicago Cubs Film "We Believe"
Director John Scheinfeld (The U.S. vs. John Lennon) has inked a DVD distribution deal for the acclaimed documentary film “We Believe” with New York based distributor Virgil Films & Entertainment (Super Size Me). Following the film’s sold-out premiere screenings at the Chicago Theatre last summer, the DVD release is slated for April 13th. Narrated by award-winning actor and Chicago native Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, CSI:NY) “We Believe” features a veritable who’s who cast of Chicagoans and explores the extraordinary love affair between the city of Chicago and its baseball team, the Cubs. In addition to the 104-minute feature length film, the DVD will be loaded with bonus extras including interviews and deleted scenes.
“We’re delighted to be working with Joe Amodei and his team at Virgil Films. Not only for their experience, but equally important for the passion they bring to the titles they represent. After all, passion is at the very heart of a Cubs fan and so, too, it has to be for everyone involved with our film,” said director Scheinfeld.
“Chicago has always been my kind of town and this film reminds me why,” said Joe Amodei, President Virgil Films & Entertainment. “It is a love letter not only to the city itself but the people that live there and in particular the always hopeful Cubs fans. This is much more than a documentary about baseball. It is a film about hope, dedication and the never give up attitude we see in the Cubs faithful. It is a look at what’s best in America. Every Cubs fan and Chicagoan must see this film. It’s about them!”
“We Believe” is the first theatrical documentary to be fully authorized by the Cubs and it is unlike any other team-related production. Produced with the complete cooperation of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Player’s Association, the film features a distinguished array of journalists, authors, cultural commentators and stars from the worlds of film, TV and music, all offering their unique perspectives on America, baseball, the city of Chicago and its people. Among those interviewed are Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Bob Costas, Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue), Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm), legendary Blues musician Buddy Guy, Hugh Hefner, Bonnie Hunt, Joe Mantegna, George Will and rare interviews with Bud Selig, Commissioner of Major League Baseball and Francis Cardinal George, the Archbishop of Chicago.
During the 9-month shooting schedule the filmmakers shot more than 220 hours of footage. Cubs officials and team executives committed to participating in the production and provided extraordinary access to players, Wrigley Field and the team’s expansive archive. The result is a compelling and visually striking movie that showcases many neighborhoods within the city of Chicago, seamlessly blended with timeless and beautiful images of legendary Wrigley Field.
The Producers and production staff are Chicagoans, the film was shot by an award-winning Chicago production company (Sedgwick Productions), edited by the city’s finest editor at one of the city’s top post-production facilities (Cutters) and the Director/Writer/Producer is Chicago-born and a graduate of Northwestern University.
“We Believe” is a love story about Chicago and its baseball team and with every love story there is bound to be some heartbreak. So, without a big, happy Hollywood ending in which the Cubs win the World Series for the first time since 1908, the creative team rose to the challenge, employing Bruce Springsteen’s anthemic “Land of Hope and Dreams,” to drive the film to a powerful, emotional, inspiring finish. After all, it’s the journey that’s important, not the destination.

Remembering Steve Goodman
This Sunday, September 20 marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Red Pajamas Records recording artist and famed songwriter Steve Goodman. Steve Goodman (July 25, 1948 - September 20, 1984) was born and raised in Chicago, and by 1969 had become a regular performer at the city's celebrated folk music clubs.
In 1971, with a little help from Kris Kristofferson, he signed his first major recording contract. It was also at this time, when he met Arlo Guthrie, who later made Goodman's hit "City Of New Orleans" legendary a year later.
In 1974, Goodman's "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" achieved considerable success on the country charts with artist David Alan Coe. Goodman's passion also rested with the city of Chicago and his beloved Chicago Cubs. He wrote and performed many humorous songs about them, including "The Dying Cub Fan's Last Request" and "Go, Cubs, Go."
Goodman was closely involved with the Old Town School of Folk Music, where he met and mentored his good friend, John Prine.
Around the time Goodman's career began to take off, he was diagnosed with leukemia. The entire time he was writing and singing, he was also fighting cancer. On September 20, 1984, Goodman died at University of Washington Hospital in Seattle, Washington.
In 2007, the Chicago Cubs began playing Goodman's 1984 song "Go, Cubs, Go" after each home game win. When the Cubs made it to the playoffs, interest in the song and in Goodman's prolific career surged, resulting in October 5, 2007 being declared Steve Goodman Day across the state of Illinois.

John Prine Rambles On...
As many of you know, John Prine played a show at the historic (and recently renovated) Beacon Theatre in New York City this past weekend. As usual, the show was a blast, and the opener, Justin Townes Earle, more than held his own. Expect to see him back with John at some point down the road.
What many of you might not know is that John made a quick trip up to Woodstock, NY to play with the Levon Helm Band at his concert series known as "Midnight Rambles" the next evening. Sounds like a pretty good time huh?
Well, since most of us missed this quaint occasion, John and Levon have decided to give us another chance to see them live. They will be playing two dates together this summer: June 6 at Chastain Park Ampitheatre in Atlanta, GA. and June 13 at Red Rocks in Morrison, CO. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets to these shows. They're sure to be a BLAST!

Duane Jarvis RIP
Oh Boy Records is sad to announce that longtime friend, collaborator and world class musician Duane Jarvis passed away yesterday in his Los Angeles home after a 16 month bout with colon cancer. He was 51.
Jarvis played guitar and bass on a number of recordings for John Prine as well as on the road with him for some time. He had, as Rosie Flores once said, a "Keith Richards flair and a honky-tonk heart". His spirit and creativity will certainly be missed.
Read more about Jarvis and his life in this Tennessean article by Peter Cooper.

The true story of 'Go Cubs Go!'
Here is an article from the L.A. Times about the back story to the recording of Steve Goodman's baseball hit, "Go Cubs Go". There have been a number of articles that have gone into the beginnings of the song, but Patrick Goldstein, author of the piece, actually talks to Hank Neuberger, one of the engineers and producers for the song. In it, he recounts how the song came about and some of the players involved. Here's one of our favorite quotes from the Hank:
"But the most timeless aspect of this record, the secret ingredient that makes it work as well today as back in ’84, is simply Steve’s magical voice. You can’t hear Steve Goodman’s voice without hearing the smile and joy inside it. The very sound of Steve’s delivery expresses what every Cub fan at the ballpark feels -- that there’s no place on Earth today we’d rather be than right here at Wrigley Field."
Couldn't have said it better ourselves. Big game tonight folks. First pitch is at 8:37 CST, so make sure you're in front of a massive TV and remember, "Go Cubs Go"...
Click here to read the rest of the article.
And if you haven't yet, make your way over to our online store and pick up a copy of Steve Goodman's The Baseball Singles EP, as well as our brand new "Go Cubs Go" shirt!

"Go Cubs Go" piece to air on NBC's The Today Show
Tomorrow or Thursday (sorry we don't have the exact day), there will be a nice piece by our good friend Mike Leonard airing on The Today Show about the now classic Steve Goodman baseball song, "Go Cubs Go". Given the play of the Chicago Cubs this season (best record in the NL), coupled with the fact that it has been exactly 100 years since the team last won a World Series, there is much reason for optimism that this may actually be the year that they win it all (fingers crossed) and we couldn't be happier to be even a very small part of it. The Today Show airs on NBC every morning at 7:00 AM CST, so make sure that you catch it either Wednesday or Thursday on NBC.
Also, if you want to show your Cubs (or Steve Goodman) pride, make sure that you pick up the new "Baseball Singles EP" that we have just put together and are offering exclusively to our customers on Musicfansdirect.com. The disc will feature "Go Cubs Go" along with "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request", "When The Cubs Go Marching In" and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and is available for pre-sale now. Go get it today, and "Go Cubs Go"!

Steve Goodman, and the Surprising Story of "Go, Cubs, Go"
There was a nice article that ran in the Huffington Post the other day about the unlikely beginnings Steve Goodman's baseball classic, "Go Cubs Go". Originally written in 1984 as a jingle for WGN in Chicago, the song sort of slid into obscurity until last year. Now, as the Cubs close in on their second NL Central division title in a row, the song, and the expectations for this team, are bigger than ever. Here is to a great rest of the baseball season. It should be a good one..."Go Cubs Go"!
